Walmart Inc., also known as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc or Onewalmart is an American multinational retail company that operates hypermarkets (also known supercenters), discount department shops, and grocery stores. Its headquarters are in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Sam Walton founded the company in nearby Rogers in Arkansas in 1962. The company was incorporated under Delaware General Corporation Law October 31, 1969. It also owns and manages Sam’s Club warehouses.

Walmart had 10,593 stores and clubs across 24 countries as of January 31, 2022. It also owns 100% of operations in Chile, Canada and South Africa. Walmart Brasil has been renamed GrupoBig in August 2018 and now holds a minority share. Private equity firm Advent International owns 80 percent of the company.

Walmart is the largest company by revenue with US$548.743 trillion, according to the Fortune list for 2020. With 2.2 million employees, it is also the world’s largest private employer. The Walton family controls the publicly traded company. Sam Walton’s descendants own more than 50 percent of Walmart, through their holding company Walton Enterprises as well as their individual holdings. 65 percent of Walmart’s 510.329 billion in sales were from the United States.

In 1972, Walmart was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It was the most profitable retailer in America by 1988 and the largest revenue earner in October 1989. Although initially it was limited to the South and the lower Midwest, the company had expanded to all corners of the country by the 1990s.

In New Jersey, Sam’s Club was opened. The first California store opened in Lancaster in July 1990. In October 1990, a Walmart opened in York in Pennsylvania. This was the first major store in the Northeast.

Walmart’s foreign investments have had mixed results. While its operations and subsidiaries in Canada and the United Kingdom, South America, South America and China are successful; however, its ventures in Germany, Japan and South Korea failed.
